Apple TV+ didn't really benefit from the good health of the video streaming market at the end of last year. JustWatch, a handy service that allows you to consult the catalogs of all VOD/SVOD platforms, analyzed the fourth quarter in the United States and was able to estimate the market shares of each other. With 3% of the market, Apple TV+ is dead last, behind services launched last year: Peacock with 6% (available since April) and HBO Max with 9% (launched in May).
An unenviable place therefore, but Apple TV + only offering exclusive content without a catalog background, the service is less used than others with a better selection. Playing with bad luck, the pandemic has paralyzed a good part of the filming – it has affected all platforms of course, but it is particularly handicapping for a service which only relies on unpublished material.
Disney is quite well positioned with Disney+ (13%) and Hulu (14%). Amazon is second with 22% of the US market, and of course Netflix wins the prize with 31%. Netflix which has exceeded the milestone of 200 million paying subscribers worldwide. These figures corroborate those shared by the Wall Street Journal which gave Apple TV + far behind the leaders of the sector, as well as those of the CNC in France.
In this context, we understand what motivates Apple to extend the free trial period, which will go from one year to twenty months, until July. Even if the catalog continues to expand, it's still a bit tight to justify the €5 requested each month.
