If you used a Mac in the 1990s and 2000s, you must know Toast, a famous tool that allowed you to burn CDs and DVDs. Since those glorious days when we burned at all costs, to save data, create playlists for the car (but yes) or even send family vacation movies, burning has quickly lost its preponderant place in our digital life. Toast has also lost its place as essential software on macOS, but that does not mean that it has disappeared.
Its publisher proves it well, by releasing Toast 19, a new major update to its app! Difficult to innovate again in this area and the novelties are quite rare, the editor announces a new interface more intuitive and especially which manages the dark mode of the system. Tools have been added to improve the audio track and the more complete "Pro" version also includes the latest updates of Painter Essentials (drawing tool) and WinZip 8, another app that has not disappeared despite its great age. .
This new version optimized for macOS Catalina and ready for macOS Big Sur is above all the assurance that Toast should not disappear anytime soon. The publisher does not mention it explicitly, but we imagine that he was able to work on the DTK provided by Apple to ensure that his app will be compatible with Apple Silicon Macs which will begin to be released in the coming months.
Incidentally, we were able to verify that CD and DVD burning had not disappeared from macOS Big Sur. If you have a Mac with a disc burner, built-in or connected via USB, the Finder always detects blank media, so you can drag files and burn them. An app like Toast offers much more and can in particular burn audio CDs that will be read by any player or car radio, DVD videos that will be compatible with a home player. But the Finder still offers a solution to burn a data CD or DVD.
Toast 19 is sold for €90 in the basic version or €140 in the Pro version, which notably allows you to burn Blu-rays. If you owned a license of a previous version, the update will cost you €60 or €80 respectively. macOS 10.14 is required at least and the app is translated into French.
