Audacity is a well-known audio publisher that has the double advantage of being open-source and multiplatform, with a version available for MacOS.Its interface is not the most modern or ergonomic there is, but its many functions, its gratuitousness and its large availability explain its popularity. This is why the announcement of its acquisition by the Muse Group could worry at first glance.
To be precise, Muse Group bought the Audacity registered trademark and therefore the name of the program. The entire code being open-source, the new owner can do nothing to prevent the current app from continuing to operate normally.Besides, anyone could make a "fork", an identical copy and make it evolve independently.
Nevertheless, the intentions of Muse Group do not seem malicious. The company announced that Audacity would remain a free app, funded by additional options that can be chargeable, such as a cloud storage space. But future updates should remain free and all current features also.Musse was born on a similar model, recalls the mini machines site, successfully: the basic app is free and open-source, an optional subscription allows you to unlock content and additional services.
Audacity should even benefit from this renewed interest, especially on the interface side which should (finally!) Evolve.A dusting will not hurt this app that will celebrate the 21st anniversary of the release of its first public version at the end of the month.Muse Group will put its developers and designers to contribution to review the interface, simplify it when possible and improve its ergonomics.
In the meantime, Audacity 3 is released recently and it is a major update which inaugurates in particular a new format for its own files:
