Do you want to stream the games of your gamer turn on a Mac, but you don't know how to do it? Luckily for you, Michael Kenny has developed Moonlight macOS, an app that takes advantage of NVIDIA's "GameStream" streaming technology. With it, you can stream games from your Windows computer to a MacBook. If it is unfortunately reserved for owners of an NVIDIA graphics card, the solution is very effective.

If you've ever looked into the subject, you're probably familiar with Moonlight PC, an effective solution that isn't native to Apple's OS. Moonlight macOS is a fork of Moonlight PC which offers the advantage of being based on the AppKit framework. The interfaces are therefore pleasant and homogeneous with the rest of the system. In practice, the app is compatible with Xbox controllers and allows streaming up to 4K / 144fps.

The configuration is quite simple: on Windows, you will need to activate GameStream in the GeForce Experience application. On Mac, download Moonlight macOS and link the program to your PC. Once this is done, a library of your games appears on Mac, which you can launch with one click.

Having tried it for half an hour on a MacBook Air M1 paired with my gaming tower, the experience was fluid and pleasant. There are a few crashes here and there, but everything runs smoothly once in play and nothing disturbs during the games. All of the Steam titles tested launched and the performance was there. Several resolutions are offered as well as two video codecs (H.264 / H.265). A "Wake up" mode is available to turn on your computer remotely. In short, an application that can be practical if you go on the move but still want to access your PC games.

Why not use the Steam Link application simply to stream your Steam games? She works very well as well.

NVIDIA: Moonlight macOS allows you to stream your Windows games on Mac | MacGeneration

@Ritooon

Because it's steam and an NVIDIOUS competitor!

bonnepoire |

Via moonlight you have total control. With steamlink there are limitations. Impossible to play Fortnite or other games outside steam. Moonlight is terribly effective.

Ritooon |

So, I was going to answer, that to play games outside of Steam OK, but that for Steam, I found the SteamLink client really very good and without any particular installation. But I just saw that Moonlight is available on WebOS (LG TV)... So I'm off to try that! haha

*** EDIT: It requires a bit of config to read the doc, but it goes very well on WebOS (LG TV). Too bad my TV has no bluetooth x)

bonnepoire |

@ RitooonI tested on AppleTV and it's perfect. On a 65" we just see the compression of the reds. But it's fluid and without latency.

@bonpoire

With steam Link I can play world of warcraft and other games without any problem so it's quite possible

bonnepoire |

@ Bounty23I can't play some games including Fortnite or Tomb Raider on the pad. SteamLink recognizes them as keyboards even though I have an xbox elite 2 pad.

I should have clarified that it was at the pad that I had problems.

@bonnepoire

I can play Fortnite with SteamLink very well

bonnepoire |

@armandgz123The pad is never recognized as a pad for non-steam games.

Works great on Apple TV too

Valiran |

This version works better than the standard version?

bonnepoire |

@ ValiranWhat is the standard version?

kiddsoso |

Windows Remote Desktop works fine otherwise

Valiran |

@kiddsoso

Go ahead and launch a game in ultra and play a game in rdp…

Ritooon |

Hmmmm have you ever tried to launch something other than solitaire with RDP? In remote, the session does not support the graphics components of the host PC.

Even Hearthstone doesn't want to start in RDP

FrDakota |

@Ritooon

For my part, I use Splashtop to play on the PC with my iPad, it is much more efficient than TeamViewer. (never tried with RDP)

bonnepoire |

@ kiddsosoPlaying in RDP is just impossible. An fps is disgusting latency and compression.

scratchyx |

I've been using it for some time and I'm absolutely a fan, you can add the desktop in the nvidia app which allows you to control your pc from any device (ps: just annoy by the restrictions of the range of ports usable by my recent Freebox, if there is a connoisseur…?)

bonnepoire |

@ scratchyx That's how I use it too: the desktop. As I play the pad I also installed playnite so I can do without a keyboard.

PS: I'm a veteran console gamer and I play in my living room, not in an office.

apocrypha |

Why don't you play on pc directly? Either way it's on

vicento |

@apocrypha

Finally a good question (if we stay local)

joel_1978 |

I was going to ask the same question...

Rictusi |

It may be of interest, it depends on the households and the apartments. In my case, it allows me to play upstairs without my girlfriend being disturbed by the noise when she is working in the living room.

With this solution, you can also play remotely with friends and share a wild game of Overcoocked.

apocrypha |

Yes well, not convinced. A PC is moving and the latency with the Internet at someone else's must be detrimental to the so-called Gamer's performance with 1ms in 120 FPS or whatever. In addition, you have to leave the PC on at home, right?

Rictusi |

No I can't move my PC tower, it's in the living room and serves as a media center.

For local multiplayer or solo games (tomb raider, overcoocked..) no latency is noticeable, moreover, not all of us have the fad or the means to play in 4k / 120fps.

To turn on the pc remotely, I connect to my raspberry and I turn on the pc with Wake On-lan.

But I readily admit that the solution is not necessarily useful to everyone, it is undoubtedly a niche market.

bonnepoire |

@ apocryphaWith this solution there is no latency for me. On the other hand, you need a stable wired or 5Ghz connection. In 2.4 it's not great.

No need to leave your PC on since there is an option to wake up the PC (WOL).

bonnepoire |

@ apocryphaMy children each have their own PC but prefer to play multiplayer games with me in the same room. So they play on their iPad (or macbook) and I play on my PC.
