Salto, which claims to be "the French entertainment platform", elicits more than polite interest, and better still, the streaming service of TF1, France Télévisions and M6 has even signed some pretty hits in recent months, such as the James Bond collection, the 20 years special programme of the Harry Potter films or even the broadcast of the series just like that … , suite from Sex and the City. But this does not translate into the number of subscribers, according to Capital's information.

Mid-January, Delphine Ernotte the President of France Télévisions put forward a total of 700,000 subscribers. In fact, this would be 500,000, according to the publication, if we remove from the lot the "free" subscribers who take advantage of the trial period offered but who will not get their hands in the pocket afterwards. In any case, this is far from the goal of exceeding one million subscribers by the end of 2021.

Salto broadcasts not only TNT channels, but also catch-up programmes, as well as a catalogue of content drawn from the rays of its broodstock, which are sometimes broadcast as previews. But these programs are generally available on the replay services of the channels. In order to keep its subscribers, Salto offers exclusive content intended to represent the gondola head of the platform.

But very little in the end: the selection of "new Salto" represents 255 hours of programs, out of a total of 15,000 hours. Less than 2% of the total content offered on the site … The platform also suffers from not being widely distributed in the operators' boxes, an indispensable gateway to reach a large public first customer of the programmes of the French channels (the younger ones are used to going through the dedicated application). Only Bouygues Telecom, which is part of the same group as TF1, signed.

Salto's failure to succeed lies on the shoulders of the trio of broodstock, while the launch of the service has been delayed for several years because of its bold public / private structure, which required the green light of the competition authority. Originally, Salto was a project carried only by France Télévisions, it was to be released … Early 2017.

While TF1, M6 and France Télévisions have planned a budget of 250 million euros over three years, Salto accumulates the losses. They are expected to reach 130 million euros by the end of 2021 … In these circumstances, it is difficult to be optimistic about the future of the service. The merger between the two private channels could be the first nail in the coffin, as TF1 and M6 could buy from France Télévisions the assets of their common platform. Delphine Ernotte made no secret that this could be an option that would allow the public service to relaunch a streaming project, but this time with its European counterparts.
