A few days before its release, the PS5 is in the starting blocks. We were able to take advantage of it for two weeks, test it from every angle to see what the future of video games was made of according to Sony. Interface, catalog of games, promises and possibilities: an overview of the (great) youngest from PlayStation.

Seven years after the advent of the PlayStation 4 and Sony's subsequent outrageous dominance over this generation of consoles, the PS5 seems to be shaping up to be much more of a tiptoe. Far from boasting and snoring a certain idea of the power that must accompany any entry into a new era, Sony's youngest has played the card of the promise of a new experience for the player. Or rather all the players.

It made its arrival — far from being discreet — at the editorial staff of Frandroid, just to pass into our hands as curious players faced with the promise of a new video game day. Will she do as well as her eldest? We give you our keys to make your opinion.

How does this test work?

A new console generation is a mini-event that does not happen that often. We have therefore decided to offer the most complete test possible, from opening the box to the gaming experience with the PlayStation 5. Here is a longer test than those you are used to on Frandroid. Do not hesitate to use the summary to go directly to the points that interest you the most.

To have our feedback on the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition, we have dedicated a feedback to it.

The maxi-box

Giant console, giant box. The PlayStation 5 obviously has a packaging to its (dis)measurement. Make some space before unpacking all that! But it is ultimately less wide than one might have expected. Everything has been optimized inside and we can't really say that Sony has multiplied the frills for its new precious. With the exception of the PS logo on the box enclosing the box, it's sobriety itself. Something to contrast somewhat with the size of the monster that you have to manage to get out of its box when you don't have too many centimeters to spare in height...

The PS5 has arrived! Our first impressions of this MONSTER! (+ DualSense controller)

Inside the cardboard box, apart from the well-protected console, there is the DualSense controller and a smaller box placed on top of it all. It contains the USB cable to charge the controller, the Ultra High Speed HDMI 2.1 cable to connect the console to your screen and support 120 Hz, the power cable and the base to hold the console horizontally or vertically, depending on the position you have chosen. Fortunately, Sony has once again given up on a power supply despite the power of its PS5. Phew, it's always that less to fit near your TV!

Astro's Playroom is included with the console.

Make room!

Dramatic design change for the PS5. Exit the straighter and black lines of the previous generation, the newcomer is all in white and black curves. But in XXL mode! The PlayStation 5 is by far the largest of the consoles and the most massive (39 cm x 10.4 cm x 26 cm for 4.5 kg), even more than the Xbox Series X which we already thought was huge. Plan space next to your TV to store it or in your furniture, also thinking about the space needed around it so that the heat can escape well. And its design will not necessarily please everyone: futuristic for some, a little too "old-fashioned Wi-fi router" for others, it will clearly not be acclimatized to all interior styles.

Vertical or horizontal

The accompanying stand is welcome to stabilize the PS5, whether vertically or horizontally. It turns to adapt to the chosen position (there is a screw to fix underneath to consolidate it even better vertically).

Small subtlety: take a good look at the PlayStation logo on one side of the console. If you choose to lay it down, it should stay on it. The curved part of the 4K UHD Blu-ray player is then found below, which is not necessarily obvious at first sight and one would tend to want to position it upwards (hence the importance also of placing it on its base so that it does not tip over). A direction that is also important if the PS5 is upright to put the discs in the right direction and not end up with an error message on the screen.

If you have room to put it in a lying position, you're in luck and it will probably be more discreet. But standing up, it takes up much less space. That is to say…

And the noise?

First good news, especially for PS4 and PS4 Pro owners: the PS5 is a little quieter. We knew that its architecture had been designed with this in mind, and this is one of the reasons for its imposing size, but the result is there. You have to stick your ear to hear it blow and it's far from dramatic. When you put a disc in the 4K Blu-ray player to install a game or watch a movie, it doesn't "take off" like the PS4 Pro might have gotten us used to.

After a few days, however, we noticed a few more frequent short-lived blowers than at the start, sometimes even in idle mode. To be seen over time if it gets worse. An update could come to regulate the ventilation more optimally.

The space around the central strip for heat evacuation // Source: Frandroid / Arnaud GELINEAU

It certainly releases heat in an expected way, but there too, nothing revolutionary for the power it sends. You won't burn your walls or the TV, and not even your hands. It is nevertheless strongly advised not to stick it to a wall, a piece of furniture or any other surface less than 10 centimeters from the ventilation.

Connectors

On the front, you will find a classic USB socket, a USB-C socket. The ignition button is located at the very bottom, below the button for ejecting discs from the player. The icons to identify them are a little drowned in the black edge. Try to memorize everyone's position well to avoid turning off the console when you just thought you were removing the game disc. On the back, the PlayStation 5 has an HDMI port to connect the console to a screen, an RJ45 Ethernet port to connect it possibly to the internet in LAN, two USB 3.1 ports and the power plug.

The perfectly marked configuration

Everything has been ultra-simplified and the configuration of the PS5 is perfectly guided. Above all, it does not need you to be connected. After connecting it electrically, then to your screen via the HDMI socket, it's time for a long configuration step.

You must first connect the controller with the USB-Type C cable to the console and then press the PS button to start the operation. You will have to adjust the screen borders to your frame, possibly insert a disc so that a first game begins to install and choose the power option for the rest mode (reduced electricity consumption, a optimized or personalized). Then comes the step of connecting your profile.

Connect your account

You have several options for connecting:

All of this can be done later, but it's better to do it right from the configuration to optimize everything afterwards. The console will also encourage you to secure your account by SMS or with double authentication (application or other). PlayStation has reported that it is possible to add up to 16 user accounts on the console, but only four can be activated simultaneously.

Transferring data from the PS4

We have dedicated an entire article to backing up and transferring your data from your PlayStation 4 and it is more than interesting to make a local backup beforehand , on a hard drive or via the cloud in your PlayStation Plus account.

Sony PlayStation 5 review: the power for immersion in the game of tomorrow

You have to admit that the step of transferring your PS4 data to the PS5 is a model of simplicity, if your old console is still nearby. You can just put them on the same internet network (which you can then configure if you have not connected by Ethernet) or via a LAN cable between the two consoles. Don't be surprised, it's going to take a little time, even a few hours, for your PS4 data, games, and settings to be transferred to the PlayStation 5. After that, you can take possession of your new Grail.

A word of advice: during the configuration, when the mention "Reading on the screen" appears, do not forget to deactivate it if you do not want to find yourself during the whole process with a slightly shrill female voice which details each element and each step.

The DualSense controller, the star sidekick

The DualSense controller is the small revolution that accompanies the console. Compared to the DualShock 4 of the PS4, it has been redesigned. In terms of design, all in white, it is more massive, closer in hand to the size of the Xbox controller while keeping its Sony specificities: it is more cut out with two handles to hold firmly and its pad on the top to all tactile manipulations. It still has its two symmetrical sticks, its 4-way directional cross and its Sony buttons (triangle, square, circle, cross). But this time they are transparent: no more colored touches! The “Share” and Options buttons are still there, but they have swapped the display of their name for more discreet icons on the controller. The Share button has even been renamed Create to justify its media features (screen or video capture, editing, etc.).

Source: Frandroid / Arnaud GELINEAU The same buttons, but without color // Source: Frandroid / Arnaud GELINEAU The PS5 DualSense controller // Source: Frandroid / Arnaud GELINEAU

R1/R2 – L1/L2 triggers are now more large ones and, above all, R2 and L2 are equipped with special technology to be said to be “adaptive”. They will adapt perfectly to your gaming experience. If you have to shoot with a sling or bow, climb or swing, shoot a machine gun or rifle, the resistance of the triggers (adjustable in the settings according to your taste or your needs) gives the feeling of actually doing the action by submitting resistance. Sometimes you even have to judge your strength correctly to get the perfect move. This greatly contributes to the immersion.

The PS5 DualSense controller // Source: Frandroid / Arnaud GELINEAU

And the other big novelty of the DualSense is the arrival of more marked vibrations. Sony evokes a haptic feedback from the controller and it is true that in game, we feel the vibrations much more, resulting in new sensations in the gaming experience. Whether in Astro's Playroom as soon as you fall badly, are pushed by the wind or slip, even in combat phases in Spider-Man: Miles Morales, we live the sequence much better. To the point of sometimes still feeling the vibrations in the hands after putting the controller down.

To go furtherPS5: the DualSense controller, "a trinity of sensations to create illusion and immersion"

These vibrations combined with the loudspeaker, and therefore with the noise, the controller also tries to transcribe the sensations of the textures: you will then have the impression of evolving in a softer zone in the snow or rough if you are in running on rocky ground. Even seeing his character walking in the sand offers a feeling.

Source: Frandroid / Arnaud GELINEAU

In addition, the controller finally has a USB-Type C connector for charging. It is positioned at the front when you hold the controller in front of you, where the LED bar used to be, but this time it has disappeared. To know if your controller is activated, you will have to look at the fine LED lights that circle the touchpad above and change color depending on the player you are.

Note also the presence of a jack to connect a wired headset and a microphone button that can be deactivated by pressing it (two microphones are embedded on the controller – an orange light appears when the microphone is activated). The strange EXT port of the DualShock 4, located next to the headphone jack, is no longer present. But, on the other hand, the majority of gamers never actually knew what it was for on the previous controller and that shouldn't be missing.

Autonomy: the good surprise

The sound that constantly emanates from the controller can quickly become a bit strident. We quickly jumped into the settings to adjust it and especially lower it to play more peacefully. Because although smaller than before, the speaker area, above the PlayStation button that has become a clickable logo, sends heavy when it comes to spitting out the decibels related to the game. get out of the game a bit when the sound starts howling.

If you had experienced some disappointments with the DualShock 4, which tended to quickly run out of power, we can salute the progress made by PlayStation to make its DualSense more resistant with its 1560 mAh battery, i.e. 50% more than that of the PS4 controller. Count about ten hours before having to recharge it, a little less if you spend a lot of time on Astro's Playroom, the tutorial game for the controller and which requires a lot of its controls, in particular the adaptive triggers and the haptic feedback. And it also feels in hand with a heavier controller (280 g against 210 g), but which ultimately looks like a great DualShock 4 in a shell. And to think that Sony announced an almost identical autonomy... For once, we are more positive than the announcements of a manufacturer!

A little more significant, the DualSense can connect to a Nintendo Switch (via an 8bitdo Bluetooth adapter for example) or an Android smartphone via Bluetooth. On the latter, this will allow you to play, paradoxically enough, on… Google Stadia or Xbox Game Pass via xCloud. However, you will not be able to take full advantage of the possibilities offered such as the adaptive triggers or the touchpad, and we have experienced many disconnections or even a recognized but inactive controller. However, the DualSense does not work with your PS4, although it can connect. On PC, compatibility is announced, but it is not optimal and has proven to be quite tedious.

The ergonomics of the DualSense controller, the good idea of the PS5 // Source: Frandroid / Arnaud GELINEAU

Admittedly, the controller is a pleasant surprise. This is in particular due to its much better grip with the extended handles and its new ergonomics. Because the buttons, the cross and the sticks are the same size as on the PS4, positioned in the same way. But everything falls much better under the fingers and the pad is easier to use. However, we lacked gaming experience to get a real idea of its possibilities. This will no doubt come very soon to PlayStation Studios games and to developers who no doubt still have to tame the capabilities offered.

Other accessories

It is possible to use a DualShock 4 controller by connecting it via Bluetooth to the PS5. But it will only work with PS4 games in backward compatibility, whether in dematerialized version or disc. The PlayStation VR headset will be usable on the PlayStation 5, but the problem comes from the PS Camera of the PS4 which is not compatible. It is therefore necessary to request an adapter to connect the camera to the PS5 and thus make Sony's virtual reality headset compatible. On the other hand, the PlayStation Move controllers, also useful with virtual reality, can be used as is on the PS5.

While many of the accessories (headphones, microphones, etc.) from the PS4 can work on the new console, it also comes with its own official range. There is a 3D Pulse wireless headset that connects via a dongle plugged into the console (99.99 euros), an HD Camera to replace that of the PS4 and work with the PS VR if you do not opt for it. adapter (59.99 euros). A charging station for DualSense Wireless Controller Charging Station (29.99 euros) and a remote control (29.99 euros) for the entire multimedia aspect of the PS5 (music service, video streaming, access to films, etc. ) complete the first series of accessories for the PlayStation 5.

The smoother and more beautiful interface

Sony revealed the surprise a few weeks ago. Forget the austere, minimalist and efficient interface of the PS4. The gaming experience capable of getting you on board immediately begins the very moment you need to start the console. So, the interface of the PS5 has had a makeover and we were able to get a first glimpse of it before the final version.

It is more airy, more colorful, intuitive and dynamic. The opposite of its elder, one would like to say. Each zone is perfectly delimited. At the top right, there are the elements that you will use little or much less (search, parameters and settings, your profile and the time). On the left, two tabs appear: games and multimedia content.

The games library on the PS5

This time, the latest titles you have accessed or downloaded appear, at the top left of the window, in the form of mini thumbnails. When you pass over it, the visual of the game dresses the wallpaper and all the elements concerning the title are displayed, whether it is to launch the game or return to an old portion of the game, see the last challenges you were all close to realizing.

We regret not being able to change the background of the home page for the moment, which was possible on the PS4. No doubt this should be fixed in the future.

Activities, the good find

This is the main novelty of the interface. The slightly larger boxes called Activities that we see appear for each game. These are the areas crossed with the completion rate. You can then choose to pick up where you want. Some Activity cards will also be able to tell you which challenges you were about to complete and you can then choose those. One click and you are very quickly propelled to this stage of the game. It is really pleasant and in particular it avoids the somewhat long launch of a game with the choice of arriving at the desired save point.

Accessibility is not forgotten

PlayStation has made great progress in terms of the accessibility of its games (thanks to Naughty Dog in particular!). And there are now many settings in this direction within the console itself that go beyond the simple color setting or customization of controls. A very good point to meet the needs of as many players as possible!

To go furtherThe PS5 adds new accessibility settings

Storage to watch

With its 825 GB displayed on the box, but 664 GB of really usable storage once the size of the system has been deducted (but 667 GB displayed on our PS5), the console n There's nothing to brag about at a time when more and more games exceed 100 GB of space. Because it is also the other side of the coin of technological progress. By allowing more lighting effects, more textures and details to be added to the graphics, a bigger game. Call of Duty Black Ops Cold War is announced at 133 GB, the full version of Spider-Man with the two games will occupy more than 100 GB. And if you also dream of adding the future Cyberpunk 2077 or the old GTA V or even Red Dead Redemption 2, you will have to draw a short straw which games you intend to sacrifice to keep some space.

Otherwise, the solution will be to add an external disk or an internal SSD in M.2 format which must be as fast as that of the PS5. Sony has already announced that the M.2 docking port will not be activated when the console is launched. Obviously you will have to wait for a software update. On the other hand, your old PS4 external hard drive containing your backups and possible games will still work to relaunch them on the PS5.

Services

The PlayStation Store appears in the Games area. It is now better value with a more readable dedicated area. It is also positioned to the far left of the game icon bar at the top. The Store is categorized into four tabs:

The PS Plus Collection service of the PS5

Disney+, YouTube and Netflix on board

With a remote control announced by PlayStation, we better understand the usefulness of the Multimedia space. This time, the video, music and TV applications are differentiated and have their section. Here we find access to Netflix, Disney +, Prime Video or Apple TV +, but also Plex and Spotify. It will also be possible to access YouTube by downloading the application. On the other hand, no web browser this time on the PS5 for other services.

Once your account is set up, your playlists will be added to the PlayStation music suggestions in the navigation bar activated via the PS button.

A musical selection available on the PS5

The apps available are not legion and the area deserves to be a little more provided to have a real interest, not just to exist to offer additional subscriptions.

Faster, higher, stronger

We won't go back over the technical characteristics of the PS5 already detailed in length and across (AMD Ryzen Zen 2 processor, AMD RDNA 2 GPU of 10, 28 TFLOPS, 16 GB of RAM…). Once you have the console in front of you, what you want above all is to know the quality of the experience it will offer us. And the most important thing is quite simple: play the most reliable and beautiful games as quickly as possible. Take full advantage of the experience.

And in that, the PS5 does not disappoint. Sony has made its ultra-fast PCIe 4.0 SDD its shocking argument, boasting extremely high read speeds (5.5 GB/s). You still have to realize that. Just by crisscrossing the interface, we realize how much the power of the console is at the service of the experience from A to Z. We navigate fluidly from one tab to another, from one area to other. Validate an action, choose a game to launch: everything is faster and seems so much more intuitive. What to pass the interface of the PS4 for a heaviness of another time.

First element that fascinates: game installation times are also shorter. The performance of the SSD means that the PS5 can be satisfied with a small portion of data loaded from a disk (about 25%) to launch the game while in the background, it continues the installation while you play.

20201104203753

Launching games faster

It took us 1'47” on the PS5 to actually start playing Watch Dogs Legion (PS4 version) after clicking on the thumbnail from the interface of the console (30 seconds to launch the game and arrive at the reception). This is one minute less than for the same game, also in dematerialized version, launched on a PS4.

The same goes for Red Dead Redemption 2 which we had on disc and which took 2'00” to show us Arthur Morgan on the base camp of the band when the PS4 saw him at the end of 2'35".

Better looking games

The PS5 claims to natively handle 4K UHD up to 120Hz (can also handle 8K content, but we didn't have any on hand) and HDR for compatible TVs. Spider-Man: Miles Morales is the only PS5 game (although it will also be released in a PS4 version) that we were able to test. It completely reflects the power the PS5 puts into graphics and gameplay. It comes in 4K/60fps, but without ray tracing and lighting effects. For this, it will be necessary to switch to “Fidelity” mode to take full advantage of it (4K / 30 fps). Ray tracing is also managed physically by the console and we regret not having had more titles to really appreciate its addition to a game to which it must bring a little more realism.

Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales in 4K/60fps without ray-tracing // Source: Game capture Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales in 4K/30fps with ray-tracing // Source: Game capture

And it's a success: the New York of the new Marvel hero who appears, under his coat of snow, is luminous, detailed and alive. It is swarming with people in the street. Spider-Man twirls in the air without ever harming the console by freezes or slowdowns. If you have already played the initial opus on PS4 which was already a great success, this spin-of shines with its light effects on the buildings of the city.

The power of the SSD is also used to manage a large amount of data in real time to support camera effects, calculate scenery changes more quickly and thus create a fairly palpable impression of speed when Miles swings from one building to another. Add to that the vibrations of the controller and the effects of its adaptive triggers during the combat phases, here is all the possible immersion in the game, visually and in sensations.

Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales

In an open world like Spider-Man, the power of the SSD makes it possible to erase possible transition screens between areas. Sony also promises that there will be no more download times or that they will be so minimal that switching from one universe to another will be transparent. In Devil May Cry 5 Special Edition, a version of the game improved especially for the PS5 with additional content, the player can opt for a framerate of 120 FPS, but it will only be without ray tracing (and with a compatible TV). Capcom's game is magnificent in this version taking full advantage of the full power of the console. Too bad it doesn't have to be reduced to 4K/30 FPS or Full HD/60 FPS to have ray tracing and all the effects that enhance the graphics of this apocalyptic open world.

Devil May Cry 5 Special Edition for the PS5 // Source: Capcom

The PS5 obviously supports Full HD and fortunately 720p. But unfortunately it is not able to adapt to 1440p. Bad news for anyone who has dreamed of sticking their 2K screen to the PS5. They risk seeing their game upscaling to display well.

Sound and image almost there

3D audio on top, but not everywhere yet

Everything is nevertheless done to immerse the player perfectly, taking advantage of the power audio from the console that we feel in the speaker of the controller in particular. The PS5 offers 3D audio with dedicated technology. Unfortunately, you need a compatible headset to enjoy it, because Tempest 3D Audiotech technology is not yet deployed on your TV speakers. But be patient!

However, we were able to test this new sound with a Stealth 700 Gen 2 wireless headset from Turtle Beach (180 euros), compatible with PS4 and PS5. It features 3D surround sound that's nice and detailed enough to fully immerse yourself in the game. And there are different modes to choose your experience from and a mic that integrates with the headset for voice chat.

Stealth 700 Gen 2 Wireless Headphones // Source: Turtle Beach

No Dolby Atmos or Dolby Vision

If your TV is HDR compatible, the PS5 adjusts automatically. On the other hand, no trace of Dolby Vision. We will still have to wait to see the update magnify the experience. The PS5 will be able to output “up to 8K resolutions” for compatible content. But, despite what it says on the box, it won't be at launch, Sony said. We will have to wait for a future system software update.

The catalog of games, the Achilles heel...

If you had to find a weak point in the PS5, apart from its size and design problem, it would be the catalog of games. He's weak, to put it politely. The new generation of consoles arrives a bit unadorned to thrill players and arouse envy. Apart from Spider-Man: Miles Morales (also available on PS4), the other exclusives to come can be counted on the fingers of one hand by the end of the year (Demon's Souls, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, Sackboy A Big Adventure, Astro's Playroom, Godfall — also on PC). Other games like Assassin's Creed Valhalla, Call of Duty Black Ops Cold War or Devil May Cry 5 Special Edition among others are coming to all platforms. Bugsnax is already announced on the PS+ for November 19 and officially sports the PS5 game tag.

To go furtherPS5: from Spider-Man to GTA V via Resident Evil and Horizon, all the games announced

It's a bit thin for a start, while the PS4 still has a very good and long life ahead of it, given the number of consoles installed. The games on this generation will still be numerous for several years while the exclusives or PS5 only titles which can switch players to the new generation are still too missing to win membership.

But we must at least admit that the technology of the PS5 does them credit. Carrying a PS4 game yourself on the PS5 means giving it the benefit of the power and advances of the console (in particular the reduced loading times). Some are already "patched" to take advantage of improvements related to the PS5 (framerate at 60 FPS for example), such as Days Gone, Ghost of Tsushima and Everybody's Golf. More will follow shortly after launch. But not all PS4 games will be.

Watch Dogs Legion in PS4 version on the PS5 // Source: Screenshot of the game on the PS5 Watch Dogs Legion in the game PS4 on the PS5 // Source: Screenshot of the game on the PS5

Like Devil May Cry 5, NBA 2K21 has already experienced a release on the now previous generation at the start of the school year. But it lands on the next one with dedicated versions, different from a patched improvement. We were able to compare the two games on the PS5 (the PS4 game ported to PS5 and the PS5 update). If the differences are not drastic, they are similar to small visual improvements that have a lot of effects. The play of light and reflections are clearly visible, the whole game gains in fluidity of movement to tend towards more realism.

Backward compatibility finally in place

C t is a small revolution at PlayStation or rather a welcome return to an old time, that of backward compatibility. 99% of PS4 games will be able to be played on PS5 (the list of 10 exceptions). From there to say that the Japanese manufacturer was rather constrained and forced to do so after the success of its previous console... we will say so!

Benefit of opting for the "classic" PS5 rather than its Digital Edition version without a Blu-ray player, all your games on disc can be introduced into the device to be launched. On its sister, it will be necessary to have owned the game in dematerialized to have it.

The little extras

The DualSense controller has kept the Share button — now Create — which set the DualShock 4 apart from its Xbox competitor. This time, the text has been replaced with a logo, as with the other Options button. You can easily capture an image, a video (from 15 seconds to 15 minutes) or even record the last seconds or minutes of games stored in memory. Ideal especially if you have just achieved a feat that you failed to immortalize.

You can also broadcast your game on Twitch or YouTube with one click from the Create button. The settings allow you to choose to capture your videos in 4K or not (be careful, it will be in Webm or mp4 format in lower quality), to integrate the audio from the microphone of the controller or from your possible Parties with friends.

The PS button navigation bar

The navigation bar that you display by pressing the PS button has a game selector, the current one and the last ones you have played are displayed. A very practical way to switch from one game to another without having to go through the home of the PS5.

And we said it, Activities is the good find also during the game with the display also of the challenges that you could take up at the moment of the game where you are after pressing the PS button, which is definitely full of multiple possibilities.

PS5 price and availability

The PlayStation 5 will be available on November 19 for 499 euros. The console version without a Blu-ray drive, the PS5 Digital Edition, is identical when it comes to experience and performance. But its price is lowered to 399 euros.
