Many Free users have been waiting for it for years. Free has changed the procedure for recovering passwords for subscribed areas. From now on, a link is sent to the subscriber who has forgotten his password to reset it.
Xavier Niel's operator has finally encrypted his passwords to access the Freebox subscriber area. Indeed, previously, a subscriber who forgot his password and clicked on the link to recover it received all of his identifiers in clear by email, as below.
The password and credentials were displayed clearly and this was a security issue. This meant that a malicious person could directly access these passwords if they entered Free's database. The operator has therefore changed the game, by encrypting the passwords in its database, which also changes the way of recovering its password. From now on, a unique link is sent to the subscriber, valid for 30 minutes so that the latter can change his password.
Free has therefore thoroughly reviewed its password management system. A way to protect the subscriber and his identifiers. A person breaking into the Free database will thus have no way of accessing the passwords of Freebox subscribers. The encryption of this data was expected from Freenautes, it is now a reality.
