Between 4,500 and 6,000 people would be suffering from deafness in France, a rare handicap combining both a visual and hearing impairment that can be more or less severe, according to estimates by the National Association for Sourdaveugles. To help them communicate by phone, the French Telecoms Federation (FFT) and the RogerVoise company has just announced the launch of a new telephone service adapted to deaf users.

Since October 1, 2018, the Rogervoice mobile application has allowed deaf and hard of hearing people to make and receive calls thanks to three communication methods: the French sign language (LSF), the completed French language (LFPC) and thesubtitles. Now it also includes a Braille compatible mode.

How does the Rogervoice application work?

Handicap : les appels téléphoniques accessibles aux personnes sourdes et aveugles

After downloading the app for free Android or iOS app, the deaf person compounds the number of their interlocutor or selects it in the directory of their smartphone and launches the call via Braille beach.A co-pilot Rogervoice, writing professional, then supports the call and the comments of the interlocutor are transcribed and sent in the form of subtitles on the Rogervoice application. The user reads them on his Braille beach thanks to "Voiceover" technologies on iOS or "talkback" on Android.

He has the choice between responding directly orally or typing his answers on his Braille keyboard. His remarks will be transcribed into text in the application, and the co -pilot Rogervoice will repeat them orally to his interlocutor.

When is it possible to call?

Until September 30, the service is accessible Monday to Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 7 p.m., excluding holidays. From October 1, schedules will extend until 9 p.m. on weekdays and from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday. It will be necessary to wait until October 1, 2026 that the service is accessible 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Is the service free?

People with a package with an operator member of the French Telecoms Federation, that is to say Orange, La Poste Mobile, SFR, Bouygues Telecom and Bouygues Telecom Business Distribution (Auchan Telecom, Cdiscount Mobile, CICMobile, Crédit Mutuel Mobile or NRJ Mobile) have an hour of communication offered each month (automatic renewal) from the Rogervoice application. As of October 1, the package will increase to 3 free communication hours per month.
