Internet price worldwide: more than 33 hours of work in Nigeria

Internet access in the world is still far from being standardized in the world and the cost of an internet subscription clearly does not imply the same sacrifices.A surfhark study comparing 85 countries thus highlights these differences by comparing the quality of digital life according to five criteria: accessibility and quality of the Internet but also cybersecurity and quality of online infrastructure and services.

The most shocking differences are certainly those linked to the working time required (based on the country's average net salary) to pay an internet subscription (the cheapest offer) depending on the different countries of the study.Statista thus resumed the Surfshark study to illustrate this disparity in a graphic.

To pay your internet subscription to Nigeria, it will take no less than 33 hours of work, twice as much as for the inhabitants of Kenya who still need to work to settle their internet subscription. This is still nothing if we compare this figure with Canada where only 7 minutes of working time are needed to set its internet offer.A Nigerian must work about 288 times more than a Canadian to surf the web.

On the old continent, the results are rather good since "7 of the 10 countries with the best quality of digital life are in Europe" even if disparities remain. It takes only 48 minutes of work in France to settle your internet subscription against 1h36 in the United Kingdom and more than three hours of work in Italy.

The five pillars of good digital life

These five pillars are the five criteria selected in this Surfshark study with the cost of the Internet, stability and quality of an internet connection, digital infrastructure, online government services and online security.

The disparities between the 85 countries are substantial as reported by the conclusions of the study: "Strong inequality in terms of financial accessibility: 75% of people in studied countries must work more than the global average to offer themselves the Internet"(the global average is 3:48 hours of working time to afford the cheapest internet connection).

Regarding cybersecurity, it would also seem that Europe is very well placed in relation to the rest of the world:

The 10 most efficient countries in terms of electronic security are European Union member states.Globally, they show the example in terms of the effective implementation of cybersecurity policies and personal data protection.

In the overall classification of the quality of digital life incorporating all the criteria of the study, we still find Europe with Denmark and Sweden on the podium followed by Canada (and in 4th France!).

The arrival of the COVVI-19 pandemic, however, affected the quality of Internet connections worldwide, is Surfshark.During the first months of confinement, 44 of the 85 countries represented for the Surfshark survey experienced a deterioration in the speed of Internet connections (and 49 countries have also undergone a deterioration of the mobile Internet).
