The new format of the Champions League
This year, UEFA has implemented a new format for the competition, the characteristics of which are as follows:
UEFA announced on 24 June 2021 the abolition of the away goals rule in all UEFA club competitions. This rule had been in use since 1965 and its loss means that if in a home and away game both teams score the same number of goals in aggregate, the winner will no longer be determined by the number of away goals scored. Instead a 30-minute extension will be played, followed by a penalty shootout if the two teams have not managed to decide during the extension.
