Without surprise. Ten seats out of the twelve in the Senate were won by the platform with Andry Rajoelina (IRD), according to the provisional results of the senatorial elections made public yesterday by the Independent National Electoral Commission (CENI). The remaining two seats went to the Malagasy Miara Miainga (MMM) party of Hajo Andrianainarivelo, who is none other than a close supporter of Andry Rajoelina.

The IRD obtained the two seats to be filled in the provinces of Antsiranana, Mahajanga, Fianarantsoa and Toliara. It was in Antananarivo and Toamasina that he was neck and neck with the party of the current Minister of Territorial Development and Public Works, which lately has been at the heart of political debates concerning in particular its position vis-à-vis to the current regime.

The CENI claims to have received two complaints for irregularities in Miandrivazo and Morombe, in the province of Toliara in the context of these senatorials. "The first concerns the discrepancy of the votes counted in the ballot boxes with those appearing in the minutes, the second relates to the carrying of single ballots from outside by three major voters", explains Fano Rakotondrazaka, general rapporteur of the CENI.

Neypatraiky Rakotomamonjy, who is on the IRD list in this constituency, says that these irregularities should not change the election results in this province since the platform he represents with Jean Marcel Eongobelo, head of the IRD list, won 75.14% of the votes cast against 24% for the independent candidate, Bernardine Razafimalala.

The HCC thus has a period of 15 days from the publication of the provisional results of the CENI to officially announce the results and decide, at the same time, on the electoral disputes to which it is seized. The 6 other members who will have to complete the Senate will be appointed by the President of the Republic. The appointment must be made within 21 days of the official announcement of the results by the HCC.

The total number of senators was previously 63, 21 of whom were appointed before this reduction to 18 members. When the chamber was created, there were originally 33 senators.
