Grand Ferdinand Hotel, the big gap

Topped by a swimming pool heated to 23 degrees on sunny days, the hotel has 186 rooms in five categories ranging from the unique “Grande Suite” of 100 square meters (from €1,000)… to the simple dormitory (at from 30 €)! Which offers eight bunk berths, in wood, in the style of the Orient Express. We dream of long-distance trips and intimate mornings in the private bathroom before enjoying the common areas. At the Grand Ferdinand Hotel, chic is on every floor, in the details: there, a Lobmeyr crystal chandelier (a large Austrian house), here ceramic switches evoking the building of the 1950s and finally the elegant charcoal gray dressing the bedrooms. Austria can be enjoyed to the fullest at the Meissl & Schadn restaurant, known for its "Wiener Schnitzel", or at Gulash & Söhne whose snacks are accompanied, depending on the mood, by a beer at €1.50 or a glass of champagne at €16. At Le Grand Ferdinand, there is definitely something for all tastes and budgets.

The room to book: a bed in the eight-person dormitory with an Orient Express look or room no. 615 in the “Standard” category for its beautiful view.

The price: from €30 per bed in the dormitory, to be booked directly with the hotel.

Hotel Schani Living room, unusual

It is in an Art Nouveau building from 1906 that this hotel opened at the end of 2018. The theme? The famous people of the city. Otto Wagner, Gustav Klimt and his muse Emilie Flöge, Egon Schiele and Sigmund Freud make their discreet entrance into the 24 rooms under the brushstroke of the artist Oskar Kubinecz. More visible, the furniture unexpectedly takes on its ease: half of a chair, as if built into the wall, acts as a coat rack; a desk, cut in two, stands upright on its two legs; a velvet suitcase, on a stand, turns into a stool… Fun. As for the bathroom, it is simply separated by a curtain in most rooms. Practical detail in times of pandemic: check-in can be done via an app and the phone serves as a room key.

The room to book: n°3, the largest of the “Smart Street Rooms”, overlooking Mariahilfer Strasse.

Hotel Schani Wien, for the choice of bed

It's called sleeping with your head in the clouds! Perched on a mezzanine, the bed is under a blue and white sky and wedged between two nets, preventing sleepers from falling. There is no risk, of course, but those who are dizzy will flee the “Smart Maisonette” category and opt for a “Smart Street” or a “Smart Garden” among the 135 rooms and 10 studios. Opened in 2015 near Vienna's Central Station, the Hotel Schani Wien has taken on the color palette, yellow and pink, of the architects and designers of Archisphere. Joyful, it goes well with the city map in XXL size which allows you to quickly find your way around. The strength of the hotel lies in its reservation system allowing you to choose your floor, your room and your view… A good idea, coupled with a check-in via your telephone… which also opens the door to your room. The Schani Wien has developed its own application giving train timetables, the weather forecast or simply the best addresses in the city. Note, the hotel has a small courtyard with a green terrace.

The room to book: n°621, a “Smart Maisonette” bathed in morning sun, with a king-size bed on the mezzanine, and particularly quiet because it is on the 6th floor.

The price: from €80 for a double room, breakfast from €13.

Hotel Beethoven, a beautiful symphony

The hotel owes its name to Ludwig van Beethoven who composed his only opera, Fidelio, in the Vienna Theater next door. But not only. For its owners, the Ludwigs (you can't make it up!), music is life. The mother, Sissi, a great pianist, played for a long time on the Bösendorfer grand piano resounding today with Sunday concerts reserved for guests (excluding Covid). As for the daughter, Barbara, the manager of the place, she could have had a fine career as a pianist if she hadn't taken a tangent… Can we dream of a better introduction to this city where everything is music? The score continues on the floors with decoration sometimes Fin de siècle, sometimes Café Viennese style or other. The rooms are dedicated to a famous character who recounts the city even more intimately through a subtle contemporary play of colors. Question breakfast, the buffet has disappeared in favor of a service at the table – place the order the day before. The hotel is located a stone's throw from the famous Naschmarkt where the Ludwig family opened an eponymous bar in 2020.

The room to book: 504 dedicated to Katharina Schratt, a famous actress and the last mistress of Emperor Franz Joseph. This is the most romantic room with its contemporary round bathtub.

Price: from €100 per night.

Ruby Marie Hotel Vienna, simplicity of layout

Ruby Marie hardly bothers with decoration. Nothing superfluous for its 186 rooms, simple but comfortable. This is the whole philosophy of the Ruby Group, from Munich, which spreads its hotels in Germany, Austria and England. White walls, barely a picture on the wall, a (real) good bed... And details that make the difference, including Marshall speakers for perfect sound and ultra-fast WiFi. No wall for the bathroom but a glass screen for the shower – a curtain provides the desired privacy. There again, nothing superfluous either: the hospitality products, designed by Ruby, are paraben- and preservative-free. And once again, the detail is well felt: a soap for men and another for women, just to offer two different scents. Another highlight is the rooftop garden which hosts breakfast, afternoon coffee and sunset cocktails when weather permits. Note the curves of the building built in 1911 to house a department store. The hotel is in the 7th arrondissement.

The room to book: a room in the “Loft Rooms” category for its view of the city.

The price: from €69 per double room.

Magdas Hotel, sleeping for a good cause

Committed and militant, the Magdas Hotel is managed by around twenty refugees and a team of around fifteen hotel professionals. More than 16 countries are represented and nearly 20 languages spoken… This openness calls for dreaming big in the 78 rooms, not one of which is identical. When it was created in 2015, the hotel opted, for reasons of budget and principles, for an up-cycled decoration with the complicity of the architect Daniel Büchel. The furniture all has a story like those metal cupboards used by the Austrian railways. No television in the rooms but the reception willingly lends a tablet. A stone's throw from Prater Park, along the Danube Canal, Magdas is an urban oasis with its courtyard and affordable restaurant. The whole thing is a great social enterprise success story.

The room to book: n°421, Kalifati Suite for its size, its natural light, its atmosphere and… its small bowling alley.

The price: from €71 per night and €133 for suite 421, breakfast at €14.

Grätzlhotel, the real “boutique hotel”

Yesterday a baker, a seamstress and a lamp maker occupied the premises. Today, these old shops, and more, have been transformed into hotel suites, scattered across three neighborhoods of the city. On the ground floor, and behind showcases or simple windows, 26 rooms have been furnished by BMW Architekten with a nod to the last occupants – old lamps, for example, evoke the former electrician. Equipped with a kitchenette, the premises invite you to live independently, like a Viennese. The reception ? The street ! On arrival and departure, the key is withdrawn using a code opening a mini-safe. A problem, a question or just want to chat? The Grätzelhotel has several contact points and partners, who are happy to exchange views. Because here we come above all to approach the city differently, far from the tourist circuits and the essentials. Neighborhood life around Karmelitermarkt, Belvedere and Meidlinger Markt can be discovered through the team's good addresses. Free bike available.

Hotel Daniel Vienna, the unexpected

A boat on the roof in the middle of beehives, a caravan parked in a vegetable patch… The Daniel Vienna hotel loves travel in the broad sense and immobility, too. Who would have imagined Austrian artist Erwin Wurm's sailing ship Misconceivable running aground on the seventh floor of this 1962 building? Nobody except the hotelier Florian Weitzer who has more than one trick up his sleeve (and five establishments in Austria). After a first Hotel Daniel in Graz, he opened this Viennese address in 2011 on the same principle, that is to say “intelligent luxury at a fair price”. By intelligent luxury, we must understand simplicity. Nothing sticks out in the 116 rooms (from 16 to 40 m2) except the hammock in the “Panorama”. They look outwards through large bay windows. The hotel breakfast is well known to the Viennese who often come to mingle among the guests. Which gives a joyful life to the hotel. Bikes and Vespas for hire on sunny days.

The room to book: in the garden, in front of the hotel, the trailer fitted out with a bathtub (lack of ceiling height!) but a bit noisier than the rooms because they are close to the road. Alternatively, a "Panorama" room (517, 518 or 605) for the view of the Belvedere Palace.

The price: from €89 for a “Smart” double room, breakfast from €19.

25hours Hotel Vienna MuseumsQuartier, the show must go on

On track ! At 25hours Vienna, you quickly think you're an acrobat, a juggler or a tiger trainer. The decoration, imagined by the Dreimeta agency, evokes the circus in all its splendor. Follow the red carpet, that of the stage, leading to the 183 rooms and 34 suites. Open a door and discover artists frozen on the walls in the middle of a rabbit coming out of a hat and a carousel. The imagination takes us into the marvelous world of childhood. A stack of suitcases welcomes the television while the lampshades seem to come out of a dressing room... This pretty poetry is accompanied by real comfort developed by this hotel chain born in Hamburg. In the evening, let’s skip the best addresses in the 7th arrondissement to enjoy the rooftop and its Dachboden Bar, “a combination of beach bar and parliament canteen – without the sand or the costumes”, as we say here. Then, an Italian dish at the Ribelli restaurant, and to finish on a high note, the pressing of his own vinyl. Circus magic. We applaud very loudly!

The room to book: the Extra Large room (714) or the Gigantic Panoram (509), both “analog” with a vinyl record player, an old television, a Polaroid, a typewriter…

The price: from €139 per double room excluding breakfast.

25hours Hotel Vienna MuseumsQuartier, Lerchenfelder Strasse 1-3, 1070 Vienna, Austria. Such. : +43 1 521 510.
